Tomas A. Guterres is a trial attorney and partner in the firm. His practice has a primary focus on public entity liability, civil rights, employment law, professional liability and construction law. Tom has represented the County of Los Angeles and various cities and other public agencies in civil litigation matters involving civil rights claims, wrongful death, child abuse, and police excessive force. In the arena of employment, he has handled claims for wrongful termination, sexual harassment, ADA, retaliation, and race, national origin, age, and gender discrimination in forums ranging from trial courts to administrative bodies. Tom has also represented architects, engineers, and attorneys in professional liability matters.
As recognized by his peers, Tom was selected as a "Southern California Super Lawyer" by Super Lawyer magazine for 2007, 2008, and 2009. He served as a member of the Los Angeles Juvenile Court Dependency Tort Committee and WIC 827 Committee which assisted in establishing guidelines for the representation of dependent and delinquent minors in civil litigation, and standards and procedures for maintaining the confidentiality of juvenile records. Tom was named a member and Trustee of the Juvenile Court Task Force of the Los Angeles County Bar Association.
Tom received a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations from Boston University in 1987. He is fluent in Spanish and proficient in Japanese and Portuguese. Tom earned the Juris Doctor degree from Loyola Law School and is admitted to practice in the State of California. He is a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the Pasadena Bar Association, the Association of Southern California Defense Counsel, and the Multi-Cultural Bar Alliance (President 2003). Tom has served on the Japanese American Bar Association Judicial Appointments Committee, on the Association's Board of Governors, and as its Treasurer, President-Elect, and President. He has also been a member of the Advisory Board of the Asian Pacific American Legal Center and the Cardigan Mountain School Alumni Association.
