Samuel J. Muir

Samuel Muir practices primarily in the area of construction litigation with an emphasis on the representation of design professionals. It was 30 years ago when Sam was first attracted to helping design professionals because of their tremendous creativity, substantial benefit to society, and commitment to their clients. This initial interest has led him through many jury trials, bench trials, binding arbitrations and mediations too numerous to count. As lead trial counsel and appellate attorney for the design professional in the landmark decision of Markborough California, Inc. v. Superior Court (1991) 227 Cal.App.3d 705, Sam argued successfully to uphold the law authorizing limitation of liability clauses in construction contracts.

In preparing to enter the practice of law, Sam earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Azusa Pacific University, and the Juris Doctor degree from Loyola Law School.

Sam enjoys giving back to both his professional and personal communities in many ways. On the professional side, Sam is a frequent speaker to architectural associations such as the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Pasadena/Foothill Chapter of AIA. He continues to speak at meetings of numerous engineering associations such as American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), Structural Engineering Institute (SEI), and the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC California; formerly Consulting Engineers and Land Surveyors of California, known as CELSOC).

Outside of the legal and construction professions, Sam has enjoyed volunteering as a high school assistant baseball coach and as the head coach of a high school softball team. He has also served as the President of the Board of Directors of Union Station, one of the area's most successful homeless shelters. He has also served on the Vestry of All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, and continues to serve in various capacities within the Church.

Sam has served as a settlement officer and arbitrator for the Los Angeles Superior Court and as a volunteer for Los Angeles County Bar Association's Pro Bono Counsel. He is a member of the State Bar of California, the American Bar Association, the Los Angeles County and Pasadena Bar Associations and the Association of Southern California Defense Counsel. He is past president of the Pasadena Bar Association and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Southern California Defense Counsel. He is an affiliate member of the Pasadena/Foothill Chapter of the AIA and a member of ACEC California.
